临近约翰·约翰·列侬逝世25周年纪念日，NBC电视台将于本周五在“NBC日界线”特别节目中，播出一段枪杀列侬的凶手接受采访的录音。凶手马克·大卫·查普曼在录音中回忆，当年“任何事都无法阻止”他跟踪并杀死列侬的扭曲欲望。
“当时我被一股无法抑制的冲动控制住了。”查普曼说，“就像一辆列车，一路向前，全速前进，势不可挡。”
1980年12月8日，查普曼在列侬与妻子小野洋子从曼哈顿某录音棚回家途中枪杀了列侬。查普曼称谋杀约翰·列侬的念头始于他在夏威夷家中的一日，那时他坐在地板上，望向“披头士乐队”乐队那张《佩珀军士孤独心俱乐部》专辑，突然，仇恨就充满了他的内心。“他(列侬)是一位成功人士，可以说操控着某部分世界，可我呢，我什么都不是，我就是一个没有个性的人。”查普曼说，“想到这里，我内心中的一股力量突然爆发了。”
查普曼回忆，谋杀当晚，他守候在列侬住所旁，当轿车于不远处停下时，他内心突然产生强烈的反应。“我听见自己脑中有一个声音说，‘干吧！去干吧！’”查普曼叙述道，“他与我擦肩而过后，我便拔出枪，瞄准他的背部，扣动扳机，有5发子弹命中了目标。”
这段从未对外公开的录音录制于1991年至1992年间，为了纪念列侬逝世25周年，首次被收录于纪录片《我枪杀了约翰·列侬》中。该纪录片将于惨剧纪念日12月8日当天在英国播出，而在美国，播出时间略有提前，定在了本周五。
因谋杀列侬被判终身监禁的查普曼今年已经50岁了，此前他三次申请假释均被驳回，可这一次，他的申请终于得到批准，将于明年执行。小野洋子曾多次抗议过释放查普曼的决定，她说：“做出这样决定的人显然不理解，这次毁了列侬美好人生的谋杀给人们带来的痛苦有多么深。”
