塔帕尔斯Sincethecreature设计ofJarJarBinkswastheprototypeformostotherGungansappearinginthefilm,thedesignteamhadtocomeupwithwaystodifferentiatethoseGunganswithmoreprominentroles.Tothisend,theartistsexperimentedwithfacialfeaturesandexpressions,aswellascostuming,toachievecharacterindividuality.InthecaseofCaptainTarpals,droopingwhiskersandhair-likefinletswereintroducedtoindicateadvancedage.Furtherdesignfeaturesincludethepresenceofbattlegear,whichhelpedtogiveCaptainTarpalsthelookofacombat-seasonedmilitaryfigure.
加·加·宾克斯的生物造型，
是电影中大多数冈根人的原型，设计小组必须想办法为比较突出的冈根角色设计出不同相貌。为此，艺术家们尝试着加入不同的面部特征、表情，以及各异的着装，来区别不同角色。在设计塔帕尔斯队长时，下垂的胡须和像头发一样的小鳍，显示出了他年长的身份。再加上其他特征，比如战斗装备，塔帕尔斯队长被塑造成了一个久经沙场的老兵形象。
